Wende Parks

Austin Neighborhood Guide 2021
Wende photographed at Lenoir.

Wende Parks is a licensed Broker Associate with Moreland Properties and has been helping people find a place to live the Austin dream for 18 years. Specializing in her own “Keep Austin Weird” zip code of 78704, plus Downtown, Clarksville, Pemberton, Tarrytown and Westlake. Her early career was spent working as an international model, during which time she experienced an incredible array of cultures before settling back in her hometown of Austin. That range of experience allowed her to appreciate just how special life is here, and she loves helping her clients find their slice of it. In her free time, she participates in high-endurance adventure sports, including ultramarathons and 100-mile runs in exotic locales, playing with her rescue pups and enjoying all the amazing restaurants, festivals and outdoor activities Austin offers.

What I Love About Bouldin Creek

Bouldin Creek is the iconic Austin zip code! It’s in the middle of everything, just minutes from Lady Bird Lake and Downtown. But you don’t have to leave the neighborhood to find something amazing; we 78704-ers love to be outside and can walk to anything our hearts desire. We’ve got the best restaurants—low-key Mexican joints, neighborly coffee shops and nationally renowned spots like Uchi—plus several parks and creeks that attract wildlife. I really love the eclectic vibe of the area: cute bungalows mixed with modern architecture, creative types alongside technology gurus, young families and older residents walking the streets.

Carl Shurr

Austin Neighborhood Guide 2021
Carl photographed at Aba.

Carl Shurr is an experienced and award-winning real estate professional in Austin’s luxury real estate market. His annual sales have consistently ranked him in the top 1% of all Austin-area Realtors for over a decade. He is also a member of the Elite 25, Luxury League and Kuper Sotheby’s Circle of Distinction.

Prior to real estate, Carl studied finance and began his professional career in investment management. His interest in real estate was first as an investor, but he soon began helping others find and acquire property, and his real estate business took off from there.

Carl’s strong local and global network allows him to connect his clients to the most exclusive properties on and off the market. His connections and experience are invaluable assets in today’s ultra-competitive real estate marketplace.

Outside of work, Carl lives in Travis Heights and enjoys traveling, boating, tennis, hiking and taking his dogs, Dude and Rocky, for walks in Stacy Park.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT TRAVIS HEIGHTS

Travis Heights is a perfect blend of city life and nature. Many of Austin’s best local restaurants, boutiques and hotels lie along South Congress Avenue, many with a picture-perfect view of Downtown and the Capitol. Centered in the middle of Travis Heights are Stacy Park and Blunn Creek. Walking along the creek and trails of Stacy Park, it is so peaceful that one feels as if they are miles away from the city. And, finally, along the northern edge of Travis Heights is Lady Bird Lake and the hike-and-bike trail. Whether you are walking, biking or running, this section of the trail and lake is one of the most beautiful places in Austin.

Aba

Dining at Aba is an experience, “like taking a mini-vacation,” says Carl. The atmosphere and food will sweep you away to the Mediterranean. Combined with its excellent service, Aba is an easy choice for one of his personal favorite places for lunch or dinner in Austin.

Summer House

One of my favorite patios in Austin, Summer House, is a relaxing and beautiful spot to unwind and enjoy a casual yet sophisticated lunch or dinner. A perfect place to walk to in the Travis Heights neighborhood.

Café No Sé

My favorite spot for lunch along South Congress Avenue, Café No Sé, is an all-day cafe with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Carl says, “I’ve tried everything on the menu, and everything is good!”

Tarrytown

Anna Lee

Anna understands that no client is looking for a cookie-cutter home solution. Whether her clients seek to obtain the best price for their current home or have specific design needs they are searching for in their next home, Anna’s counsel and guidance are extraordinary.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT TARRYTOWN

Tarrytown is a wonderful and established neighborhood. You will see people walking their dogs, visiting the three surrounding parks, riding their bikes on the bike path and so much more. Our homes range from two-bedroom bungalows all the way up to multi-million-dollar properties located along the shores of Lake Austin. Tarrytown has wonderful people living in the neighborhoods, visiting local shops and the public library, while only 5 miles from Downtown Austin. Tarrytown schools are Casis Elementary, O. Henry Middle School and Austin High School, with numerous private schools within a short distance. A warm and welcoming neighborhood to call home.

TARRYTOWN PHARMACY

I have been shopping here since the ’70s, when it was located in the TarryTown Shopping Center and had a soda fountain in addition to the drugstore. Now even larger and located in Casis Village, you will find gifts, cards, merchandise and treats.

THE MENAGERIE

A “Fine Jewelry and Gift Salon” that’s been in business since 1978. With the most beautiful, curated collection of fine jewelry in the Austin area and gorgeous collections of items for your home, Vickie and her staff are always willing to help you find that special something for yourself or your loved one.

Westover Hills

Adam Zell

Austin Neighborhood Guide 2021
Adam, Fiona and Goldie photographed at Adam's home.

A Boston transplant, Adam Zell has been enjoying the great city of Austin since 2009. Adam is an interesting mix of East Coast hustle and Southern hospitality. With over 10 years of real estate experience and over 600 completed transactions, he has experience working with buyers, sellers and investors alike. Adam treats every transaction like it’s his own. He prides himself on his strong communication skills and is open, honest and reliable while advocating and negotiating on his clients’ behalf. Seeing his clients happy at the end of the day is his number one priority.

Adam loves working hard and coming home to his wife, Rachel, and their two daughters, Goldie and Fiona. He will tell anyone that being a dad is the coolest! Adam resides in Westover Hills and loves the scenic, wide streets, where he is frequently seen on scooter rides with his girls. He is passionate about sports, food, music and spending quality time with his friends and family.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT WESTOVER HILLS

The gorgeous live oak trees that line the residential streets make this neighborhood truly special. The homes in this neighborhood are typically ranch-style or midcentury modern, and many sit on quarter-acre-plus flat lots!

Westover Hills is a small and friendly neighborhood. It’s not too far away from Downtown, but it feels quiet, tranquil and timeless. In addition to its prime location, Westover boasts excellent schools across the board.

Westover Hills is a great neighborhood for those who love an active lifestyle. Barrow Preserve and Steck Valley Parks are just a short distance away and offer great trails for hiking and biking. You also don’t have to go far to find great restaurant.

Sisters SnoShack

The perfect place on a hot summer day to treat my girls to a shaved ice!

Another Broken Egg Cafe

A solid new addition to the neighborhood. This well-run chain offers great customer service and a variety of tasty breakfast options (including a legitimate kids’ menu)!

Torchy’s Tacos

Consistent and never disappoints. The queso is one of the best in the city, and for lower carbs, try a taco in a bowl. My faves: chicken fajita and the Democrat.

Clarksville

Susan Barringer

Austin Neighborhood Guide 2021
Susan photographed at a home on the market.

This issue of Tribeza profiles June baby Susan Barringer in her birthday month. Susan is a born homemaker, nurturer and foodie. Her love of home economics and cooking prompted the nicknames “Betty Crocker” and “Martha Stewart.” Growing up in Austin in the ’70s, Susan witnessed the area evolve from a collection of warehouses on Second Street hosting basement bands to a cosmopolitan paradise.

Today, Susan is a hot yoga practitioner and dedicated Realtor advocate for her clients. Susan is excited to be sharing her passion for Austin while serving those who are lucky enough to call it home. Her mission is to bring ease and expertise as she helps families navigate life’s transitions. Mentoring new agents satisfies her desire to cultivate and encourage growth. You can find Susan enjoying meals with friends in the velvet booths of Jeffery’s or sharing ideas over coffee at Caffe Medici.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT CLARKSVILLE

I’ve witnessed Austin’s transformation, but what I love about Clarksville is that it contains within it a multitude. It has the best the city has to offer—you are five minutes to your Downtown office, but it’s still what Austin is all about. I sell luxury, and my biggest luxury is being able to walk, bike and experience everything I love in one close-knit community. While walking to yoga, some of the best dining in town or the neighborhood dog park, neighbors still stop to say hello. The experience of Austin through Clarksville is very grounding for me.

Pure Yoga Texas

Hot yoga, for me, is a 90-minute open-eyed meditation. After a class, I feel I can take on anything! This studio has been a big part of my life and keeps me consistent in my practice.

Bryker Woods

Chris King

Austin Neighborhood Guide 2021
Chris and Amy photographed at Tiny Boxwoods.

Working with a broad spectrum of clients, from first-time homebuyers to discerning luxury clients, Chris King wields his finance and sales prowess in every transaction. The keystone of his success is his relationship-focused approach while always keeping a pulse on Austin’s extremely competitive market complexities. When he’s not working, you can usually find him Downtown running the hike-and-bike trail with his rescue dog, Chip.

In 2020, Amy Stubbs joined Chris’s team at Compass after years of building her business in Houston. The two have known each other since college and have been great friends ever since. Amy’s commitment to serving her clients is unmatched, utilizing her sales background to ensure a great experience. She resides in Circle C with her husband, Clint; daughter, Caroline; and two beagles.

Whether you are buying or selling in Austin, Chris and Amy welcome the opportunity to work with you.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT BRYKER WOODS

Bryker Woods is truly the community that offers it all. There are families of all ages, in all stages of their life who love living in the neighborhood. Its ease of walkability and proximity to fantastic parks, restaurants and coffee shops only add to its charm.

Her goals are to make all aspects of the buying and selling process as informative and easy as possible, have fun along the way and work hard for the best outcome. Her specialty is the luxury experience for creative people—working with musicians and artists to experience the best of what Austin has to offer.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT WESTGATE

Westgate is blossoming with more and more cool and local businesses opening their doors. It’s super close to Downtown, yet far from the crowds and bustle. It’s been great living here, as this past year was truly challenging, and all we needed was within a 5-to-10-minute drive or walk. The real estate market is changing, and there has been an increase in new construction, as the neighborhood is ideally located in the city for commuting and lifestyle.

Allandale

Julia Mistler

A native Texan and proud Austinite since 2005, Julia makes client relationships her first priority, and she has created a network of trusted clients and referrals. After working for years in professional services, Julia brings her corporate skills to the real estate industry as a constructive listener who attunes to her customers’ needs. Her energy, professionalism and relatable personality make her an effective partner in delivering your real estate goals.

Julia lives in Central Austin with her husband and children. She enjoys volunteering at St. Andrew’s School and Austin High School, as well as a Friend of Travis County Medical Society. When she isn’t selling real estate, you can find Julia walking her dog, Lula; watching her kids at their sports and events; eating at a great Austin restaurant; or watching a show in Austin’s live music scene. She loves her city and wants to share all the fantastic things Austin has to offer!

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT ALLANDALE

Allandale is a quiet neighborhood in north-central Austin. It sits along the west side of charming Burnet Road, which offers a variety of old and new local shops, restaurants and businesses.

Allandale boasts tree-lined streets with mature vegetation and mainly homes built in the 1950s and 1960s, retaining the charm of their midcentury beginnings. There are many new and modern homes to choose from as well. The winding streets lend to family bike rides and community block parties.

Allandale is home to green space and the best of Austin parks, like Northwest Park. With its excellent schools, it has become an increasingly popular place for growing families. Proximity to Downtown and the Domain area makes Allandale an easy choice for commuters.

julia@wilsongoldrick.com | juliamistler.com | 512.638.3788

Fonda San Miguel

Fonda San Miguel is my go-to for family celebrations or a quiet night at the bar. An Austin staple since 1975, I love the Mexican folk art displayed throughout the restaurant. Known for its interior Mexican cuisine, I never miss the ceviche and a pescado dish, as well as the crepes for dessert.

Uptown Modern

A furniture piece (or 10) from Uptown Modern is the perfect companion to Allandale’s midcentury vibe. All of their pieces are lovingly restored to their original glory. They also have an assortment of vintage light fixtures, art and cocktail glasses (my fave).

Shoal Creek Nursery

My favorite (and prettiest) garden store in town. On an acre and a half of green, the nursery has the best plant and succulent selection that I have seen, as well as imported pottery and water features. It’s an easy place to swing by for gardening supplies or a gift.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT OLD ENFIELD

I’m proud to have lived in Old Enfield for nearly 20 years. It is Austin’s most charming and historic neighborhood. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the streets are lined by gracious tree-covered lots and elegant homes. Old Enfield is bordered by Shoal Creek and Pease Park, where we love to walk under the towering oaks. Tia lives in 78704 with her dog and the neighborhood peacocks.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT SOUTH LAMAR

What I find most attractive about South Lamar and all of 78704 is an eclectic and casual neighborhood where everyone is welcome. Like Matthew McConaughey said, “Nobody’s too good, and everybody’s good enough.” This describes the neighborhood’s vibe perfectly.

Solid Austin

Solid is my favorite local furniture and home decor store. Every piece is hand-selected by the owners. Their look is stylish without being showy, just like Austin.

Noah Marion Leather Goods

Sip on espresso while shopping the handmade leather goods at Noah Marion’s original location or at “the Atelier” on South Lamar, or stop in at his second location on South Congress. Noah focuses on untreated leather goods made to get better and better with age.

Natalie proves time and again to be a valued partner to her clients and provide unwavering support for those looking to buy or sell real estate in our unique city.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT PEMBERTON HEIGHTS

Lined with majestic oak trees, the streets of Pemberton Heights hold some of the most beautiful historic homes in Old West Austin. Its central location offers quick access to the University of Texas, Downtown, Lady Bird Lake and many of Austin’s most loved shops and restaurants. The residents of this established neighborhood create the undeniable sense of community found here. Children playing at Hartford Park, walking the dogs to Shoal Creek trail, family bike rides and evenings on the front porch with neighbors are just a few of the reasons it’s so loved. Pemberton Heights is highly sought after and not easily replicated in the landscape of Old West Austin; it’s worth a visit to these tree-lined streets to take in the beautiful homes and soak up the friendly culture Austin is known for.

Jen Berbas

Austin Neighborhood Guide 2021
Jen and Jacks photographed at Jen's home.

Jen Berbas has been a proud Austinite since she came to Austin to attend UT, and after a few brief stints in Chicago and Minneapolis, she came back as soon as she could. Her background in finance, first as an options trader and then working in the credit markets, laid the groundwork for a career in real estate and informed much of her work. She has an affinity for spreadsheets and an excellent grasp of the real estate market and investments. Jen has been named a Platinum Top 50 Realtor for three years running and led the #2 team at Realty Austin in 2020.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT HYDE PARK

Hyde Park is a tight-knit community where you can expect welcoming neighbors and amazing quality of life. Historic Victorian beauties and charming bungalows define the well-preserved architecture here. Wide, tree-lined streets and shaded sidewalks keep things cooler on scenic summer walks, where you’re sure to catch a wave from neighbors out on their front porches. Or visit with the community at one of the annual neighborhood events like the Fire Station Festival or Halloween street fest. Shipe Park’s tennis courts and brand-new pool, as well as dining and grocery options at 43rd Street, round out everything you could possibly want just blocks from home.

Quack’s 43rd Street Bakery

Quack’s is a Hyde Park gem. Go for the chocolate cupcake and Key lime pie; stay for the casual atmosphere and great people-watching.

The enthusiastic, self-described “people person” takes an active interest in his clients’ lives, getting to know their families and maintaining friendships with them long after closing the sale. His commitment to his clients, love for his profession and personal approach to real estate transactions have given Wade Giles an edge in a highly competitive industry—and allowed him to transact over $200M in residential real estate sales.

In recognition of his success, for three consecutive years, he has qualified for membership in Elite 25 Austin, a prestigious group made up of the top 0.2% of Austin’s real estate agents and a spot among the ranks of the Luxury League, a premier membership organization that recognizes high-performing agents specializing in luxury residential sales. WHAT I LOVE ABOUT ZILKER

A timeless 04 neighborhood near Downtown, with Zilker Park, Lady Bird Lake and Barton Springs practically in your backyard. Zilker is the ultimate in South Austin living—quiet, tree-lined streets, great public schools and an unbelievably convenient location. Close to all the new developments happening around South Congress and South First but retaining a charming, family-friendly vibe outside the hustle and bustle. Architecturally, I love the mix of new builds, classic Austin bungalows, and midcentury-modern A.D. Stenger gems. Walking through the neighborhood never gets old, and the area will never go out of style.

Mason Quintana’s unofficial real estate career began in 2004 when he and his wife, Ariel, bought their first home in southwest Austin.
